Description:

Aluminium Chloride is an inorganic compound composed of aluminum and chlorine. 

1.  Aluminium Chloride:
   • This is the form without water molecules.
   • It is a white, crystalline solid, though it can appear yellowish or even dark brown when exposed to moisture due to its tendency to form polymeric structures.
   • Aluminium Chloride is highly hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water from the air and readily forms a hydrate.
   • It is an important catalyst in many chemical reactions, especially in organic chemistry, such as in Friedel-Crafts reactions (used to make aromatic compounds).
   • It is also used in the production of aluminum metal through the Hall-Héroult process, in which it helps separate aluminum from its ores.

     • This form has water molecules bound to it and typically appears as a white, crystalline solid.
     • It is less reactive than the anhydrous form but still retains many of the same industrial uses, particularly in water treatment and as a coagulant in various processes.

     Properties:

• Solubility: Highly soluble in water.
• Melting Point: The melting point for anhydrous AlCl₃ is around 192.6°C, but it sublimes at higher temperatures, turning into a gas.
• Reactivity: AlCl₃ is very reactive and can react violently with water, producing heat and hydrochloric acid (HCl). It also acts as a Lewis acid, meaning it can accept electron pairs in chemical reactions.

    Applications:

• Catalysis: It’s widely used as a catalyst in chemical synthesis, including the production of hydrocarbons, such as in alkylation and polymerization reactions.
• Production of Aluminum: In the extraction of aluminum from bauxite, Aluminium Chloride plays a role in refining processes.
• Water Treatment: Hydrated AlCl₃ is used in water treatment plants to remove impurities.
• Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics: It’s sometimes used in the manufacture of certain drugs and in cosmetics as an astringent or antiperspirant.
